Roofing: Architectural Shingles

September 26th, 2013 September 26, 2013

If you’re looking to replace your roof, you may want to consider a relatively new type of roofing material called architectural shingles.  Architectural shingles, also called laminated or dimensional shingles, are asphalt shingles that are manufactured to give an attractive, 3-dimensional appearance.  These shingles have all the benefits of regular asphalt roofing in that they are inexpensive, easy to install, and come in a variety of colors.  They also have a few additional features that make them an appealing option.

Architectural shingles are extra thick, which means they last longer and therefore have a longer warranty.  They also have a better wind tear-off resistance, so they can withstand the storms and high winds that might do more damage to a regular asphalt roof.

These types of shingles can also be made to look like other more expensive or high-maintenance types of roofing.  Cedar shakes are a classic option, but are expensive and because they are wood, they require much more care.  Slate is another attractive material, but it is very heavy, which makes it difficult and expensive to install.  Architectural shingles can imitate the look of each of these materials without their downsides.  So if you need a new roof or are just tired of the look of your current one, talk to your local builder about architectural shingles.
